Our History

Stivers Ford of Birmingham, originally called Adamson Motor Company, was founded in 1918 by Reese Adamson. After doing business for 19 years in Southside Birmingham and seeing tremendous growth, Adamson and his two partners. A.D. Harris and Ralph Howard, purchased and remodeled a cinema called The Grand Theatre to become their new Ford dealership in 1937.

Twenty years later, John R. Israel, Jr. purchased the Ford franchise from the three original owners. Although he remodeled the building for a more modern façade in the 1960s, Israel kept the name Adamson Ford because of the established and sterling reputation of the dealership and its owners.

Keeping the business in the family, Israel's son, William Israel, bought the dealership from his father in 1982. William was the one who expanded Adamson Ford's property holdings to include the state of the art Adamson Collision Center at 700 8th Street South. In the early 2000s, the dealership underwent a major change when William remodeled the showroom with the assistance of an architect, Al Chiesa. The room was gutted to the original brick and plaster walls, exposing enormous, gorgeous heart pine rafters and beams. Features of the original theatre bought by Ford, Harris, and Howard in the 1930s, such as catwalks and the stage arch, can still be seen in the showroom today.

When William Israel remodeled the Adamson Ford showroom, he also decided to beautify the rest of the area around the dealership. This led to his being recognized by the Birmingham Historical Society in 2004 for preserving and enhancing the entire city block.

Still a family-owned business, Adamson Ford is now operated by Linnea Israel. We celebrated our one-hundreth year anniversary in 2018, and we are looking forward to our next hundred years serving Birmingham!
